Artistic Pursuits
In Tulsa, the arts have a character all their own. While the city is as modern as they come, these cultural institutions have a history, a place in Tulsa history all their own. Brady Theater is a perfect example. This distinctive theatre is nearing its centennial and occupies a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, yet the show continues to go on here in the form of concerts, plays and local events. Another theatre that has survived through the generations is Theatre Tulsa, a renown playhouse that produces works at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. The Tulsa Ballet also calls the Performing Arts Center home. The graceful art in motion of classic dance is sure to delight, whether at a performance of holiday standard “The Nutcracker,” or at one of the troupe’s season events. The ballet’s classical music counterpart is the Tulsa Philharmonic Society. Director Kenneth Jean takes listeners on a symphonic journey through timeless masterpieces and more popular modern works. For a more accessible type of art, look to an Oklahoma Sinfonia concert. This orchestra has long been a community favorite for their brand of fun, contemporary musical stylings.
Performing Arts
Tulsa’s performing arts community is among the most creative and successful in the country. Entertainment options include the Tulsa Ballet Theatre, Tulsa Opera, the Tulsa Philharmonic, the Oklahoma Sinfonia, Theatre North, the American Indian Theatre Company, Theatre Tulsa, and many more. Several of these performing groups call the Tulsa Performing Arts Center home. The PAC has hosted such impressive productions as Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, and Cats. In the summer of 2002, the Tulsa Ballet was invited to perform at The Sintra Ballet Festival in Portugal. The Sintra Festival is one of the most prestigious, annual festivals in Europe.
A new stage for productions and gatherings in recent years is the Greenwood Cultural Center, which not only offers a performance stage but also the renowned collection of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and an art gallery. Located in the historic Greenwood business district, the center stands as a tribute to the area’s past and its importance as the “Black Wall Street of America” before the devastating race riot of 1921. The Greenwood area is also the home of the annual Juneteenth Jazz Festival that brings thousands of Tulsans and visitors to the area for music, food and festivities each June.
