Driver’s License
Newcomers to Tennessee have 30 days from the time they establish permanent residency to change their out-of-state driver’s license to a valid Tennessee license. To apply for a valid Tennessee license, you must pass a vision test and have a valid license from another state. For a first-time license, you must have a certified birth certificate and Social Security card (or their equivalents), and must pass a written law test, vision test and a road test. Auto Registration
As a new resident, you must get TN tags within 30 days. First you need an inspection. Don’t worry about bringing money yet, just documentation of your car’s make, vehicle identification number and year-your out of state registration information or renewal notice, and your title, if you have one.

Next, take the auto inspection certificate they give you, plus either your title or the complete mailing address of your lien holder, to the County Clerk’s office to get tags and complete the registration process. Now’s the time to bring money: it’ll cost $87.
