Corning is about 100 miles south of Rochester, but the glass museum here makes the day trip worth it.  Exhibits exploring the history of the art form and live demonstrations educate and entertain all at the same time.

Genesee Country Village is a restored, 1800s era village complete with a log cabin, farmhouse, homes, restaurants, shops, and actors garbed in period attire.  It’s about 20 miles southwest of Rochester and is the largest “living history museum” in the state.  It also has 175 acres with miles of hiking trails.

Kodak Founder George Eastman’s mansion now acts as the International Museum of Photography and Film. Exhibits relate various aspects of photography and provide a look at Eastman’s life.

More than one hundred years ago, the jiggling sweet-treat know as Jell-O was founded here, a half hour drive from Rochester.  Exhibits detail the deserts history and there’s a gift shop on site selling you-know-what.

The University of Rochester’s Art Museum has works from artists from ancient times to modern day, including Monet and Cézanne.   It also has a restaurant, gift shop, and art classes in a variety of media.

It’s a 30 minute drive to get here, but the National Women’s Hall of Fame is a must see for exhibits on many great women, including Eleanor Roosevelt and Rosa Parks.

The Science Center keeps science fun with interactive exhibits, a planetarium, and a nature center.  There are exhibits where visitors can pilot a Mars rover, look at the contents of an 1800s era time capsule, and see how every day inventions work.

There’s the National Toy Hall of Fame, train rides, giant aquarium, butterfly garden, and more at this brightly-colored museum for kids.  There’s also an old fashioned diner and ice-cream shop on the premises.

Victorian Doll Museum

It started with the curator’s childhood hobby but has now grown into a giant collection of thousands of dolls from the past century and a half.  There’s even a “doll hospital,” where aged and broken dolls are restored.
