ABOUT THE CITY
Long Island is located in southeast New York State and is the most populated island in the U.S. In 2005, Forbes magazine listed Long Island as having the lowest crime rate and less than half the U.S. average. Long Island is known for its affluence and high quality of life. The counties of Nassau and Suffolk County are known for beach towns, including the world-renowned Hamptons, and for the most eastern part of the Island, Montauk Point, home of Montauk Lighthouse. Long Island is also known for its strong middle class with a dedication to hard work, suburban homeownership, investment in schools and education and people who are strongly committed to family living and local community events. Many of these are second (or third) generation families who had originally come from Brooklyn and Queens, seeking the space and tranquility of the early suburbs. It is not uncommon for a town on Long Island to have several different pizzerias, each with its own distinct flavor. The Long Island Pizza Festival & Bake-Off is annual competition where mom and pop pizzerias compete to be named best on Long Island. What a wonderful place to raise your family.
About Long Island
Long Island is an island in the state of New York. True to its name, the island is much longer than it is wide, jutting out some 118 miles from New York Harbor, with only from 12 to 20 miles between the southern Atlantic coast and Long Island Sound. The Native American name for Long Island is Paumanok, meaning “The Island that Pays Tribute” — more warlike tribes in the surrounding areas forced the relatively peaceful Long Islanders to give tributes and payment to avoid attacks.
History
Early colonial figures on the island include Wyandanch, Smith, Captain William Kidd, Lionel Gardner, and John Underhill. The western portion of Long Island was settled by the Dutch, while the eastern region was settled by English Puritans from Massachusetts. Long Island was the scene of several witch hunts, including one involving Lionel Gardner in East Hampton. During the American Revolutionary War, the island was captured by the British early on in the Battle of Long Island, and had a notable loyalist influence, especially in Hempstead.
Neighborhoods
First decision, do you want to live in Nassau County or Suffolk County? Each has its own advantages. Nassau County is closer to the city, so if you commute to Manhattan for work, you should take that into consideration. Each town has both incorporated and unincorporated areas. Nassau County is made up of three towns: Hempstead, North Hempstead, and Oyster Bay. There are also two cities in Nassau County: Glen Cove and Long Beach. Suffolk is similar in a lot of ways to Nassau County, as you head east, things begin to change.

Robert Moses, the chief engineer of Long Island transportation, always favored cars over mass transit, so there are plenty of roads to take you around on the Island. While travel is easy, it isn’t necessarily quick. The main freeway on the island, the Long Island Expressway (I-495) is billed as “The World’s Longest Parking Lot.” All crossings off the island happen at the southwestern tip near New York City, so it isn’t a quick to get to the mainland. There are a few ferries that connect the island directly to Connecticut, which may be worth looking into.

NYC’s 3,700 buses operate throughout the five boroughs on more than 200 routes. You are usually within a few blocks of a bus stop.
It costs $2 per ride, no matter the distance. You can pay your fare with a MetroCard, a token, or exact change in coins. The driver does not give change and fare boxes do not accept dollar bills or pennies. A MetroCard can save you money on multiple rides. Options include the $7 one-day Fun Pass; the 7- ($24) and 30-day ($76) unlimited ride cards; and a pay-per-ride card ($10 for 6 rides, $20 for 12 rides, but you may put any amount onto a MetroCard).
Bus stops have a tall, round sign with a bus emblem and route number; some have bus shelters. Most also include a “Guide-A-Ride,” which is a rectangular box attached to the bus sign pole that displays a route map and bus schedule.

MacArthur Airport is owned and operated by the Town of Islip, therefore some people call it “Islip Airport”. It is the only airport in Suffolk and Nassau County with scheduled service on major airlines and serves over two million passengers a year. Ground transportation is primarily accomplished through individuals driving or being dropped off at the airport and by shuttles that connect the airport with the nearby Long Island Rail Road station in Ronkonkoma. Taxi and limousine service is also readily available.

Jones Beach State Park is a world-class swimming destination. The park offers surf bathing along its 6.5 miles of ocean beach, one-half mile of bay beach for still water bathing, and two swimming pools.
The west end of the park provides wonderful surf fishing, a boat basin and undeveloped areas that are home to a variety of migratory birds and native plants. The park is also home to the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, which includes environmental displays about the seashore, educational tours and programming for all ages.

The history of this storied franchise is vast. Beginning as an expansion team in the 1972-73 season, they played at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. An instant rival of the long time area team, the New York Rangers, the Isles did not make a dent until upsetting their NY brethren in the first round of the 1975 playoffs. The Islanders became a dynasty a few seasons later, winning four consecutive Stanley Cups starting in 1980. Only the Wayne Gretzky-led Edmonton Oilers prevented them from continuing their streak. They have never reached the heights of the glory years since. Current owner Charles Wang has made improvements, but former General Manager Mike Milbury made some questionable decisions that have left the team taking one step forward and two steps back. This season, the Islanders were in contention for the eighth and final playoff seed in the Eastern Conference until recently, where untimely losses have made it all but a formality that they will be left standing at the altar when the regular season concludes.

Community Colleges
Community colleges exist for two major purposes. The first is to serve as a bridge from high school to college by providing courses for transfer toward a bachelor’s degree. Four out of 10 collegebound high-school graduates start their college education this way.
The second function of community colleges is to prepare students for the job market by offering entry-level career training as well as courses for adult students who want to upgrade their skills for the workplace. They often offer programs that are not available at four-year schools, like fashion design.
Liberal Arts Colleges
Liberal arts colleges offer a broad base of courses in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Most are private and focus mainly on undergraduate students. Classes tend to be small and personal attention is available.
Online Learning
Recent years have witnessed the rise of online degree programs, to allow the busy professional a chance to work at their own pace from the comfort of their home on the path to getting a degree. The costs to students are typically the same as for traditional classes- and financial aid is equally available-while the cost to the institution can be much less.
There are online universities ranging from legitimate distance learning systems to fly-by-night degree-mills. It’s important to research a particular institution before deciding to enroll in their system. Generally, brick-and-mortar schools that also offer online classes are the safest, though there are plenty of fully accredited online universities out there.
Nearly 3 million students are believed to be taking online classes at institutions of higher education in the United States this year. That number has been growing about 25% a year recently. Now, virtually all public higher education institutions, as well as a vast majority of private, for-profit institutions, now offer online classes. By contrast, only about half of private, nonprofit schools offer them. Online schools offer everything from Associate’s degrees to Doctoral programs with available emphases in everything from Business Administration to Criminal Justice to Nursing. Some programs require students to attend some campus classes or orientations, but many are delivered completely online. Online courses generally require a computer with a broadband connection, but are now a serious option for the busy professional.
Public vs. Private
Public colleges are usually less expensive, particularly for in-state residents. They get most of their money from the state or local government. Private colleges rely on tuition, fees, endowments, and other private sources. Private colleges are usually smaller and can offer more personalized attention and often more prestige.
Universities
Generally, a university is bigger than a college and offers more majors and research facilities. Class size often reflects institutional size and some classes may taught by graduate students.
Upper Division
Upper-division schools offer the last two years of undergraduate study, usually in specialized programs leading to a bachelor’s degree. Students then generally transfer to an upper-division college after completing an associate degree or after finishing a second year of study at a four-year college.

In New York State, most children attend neighborhood schools that reflect the local community’s values. But small school systems are at a disadvantage when it comes to serving students with specialized needs, purchasing equipment or introducing new technology.
To solve this problem, the State Legislature created the BOCES – Boards of Cooperative Educational Services – to encourage local school districts to pool their resources. The BOCES offer services and programs that individual school districts can’t operate as efficiently or cost-effectively. Examples include specialized schools for severely disabled children, a regional computer-services center, and shared professional training programs for teachers.
Nassau BOCES serves all 56 local school districts in Nassau County, which have more than 300 schools and approximately 180,000 students. Eastern Suffolk serves 53 local school districts in Suffolk County. BOCES enables the county’s residents to enjoy all the benefits of locally-controlled schools while also reaping the benefits of belonging to a large cooperative.
