Driver’s License

New Michigan residents who wish to drive must obtain a Michigan driver license immediately upon establishing a permanent domicile (home) within the state and/or obtaining employment with the intent of remaining in this state. Acceptable identification is required to obtain a Michigan driver license.
A driver license may be obtained at any Secretary of State branch office. You will need to bring the following:
- Present proof of identity.
- Present proof of residence.
- Provide your Social Security number.
- Pass a vision test and meet physical and mental standards set by the Secretary of State’s office.
- Pass a knowledge test if you have never had a driver license or if your driver license has been expired at least four years.
- Pay the appropriate license fee. Driver licenses cost $25 for an operator and $35 for a chauffeur license.
- Pass a road skills test. The road skills test will be administered by an independent testing agency approved by the Secretary of State.
A person with a valid out-of-state driver license may have the road skills test, knowledge test, and 30-day practice requirements waived. The Secretary of State will contact your previous home state to obtain your driver record, which then becomes part of your Michigan driver record.
Automobile Registration Requirements
New Michigan residents must immediately title and register their vehicles at a Secretary of State branch office and turn in the title from their previous home state. “Resident” means every person who resides in a settled or permanent home or domicile with the intention of remaining in this state. Anyone who obtains employment in Michigan is presumed to have the intention of remaining here.
