The Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge as created by a State Legislative Act in 1946 as a separate and distinct body whose purpose is to develop, maintain and operate public park and recreational properties and facilities for all the people in East Baton Rouge Parish. BREC is a political subdivision of the State of Louisiana and does not operate under the City-Parish Government. Programs, facilities and services of BREC are available to all citizens regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.  Unless otherwise indicated, all following facilities and parks are in Baton Rouge, and all area codes are 225. Discover the animals that call BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo home. More than 1,400 animals await you in the beautifully landscaped Zoo. You’ll enjoy L’aquarium de Louisiane, which features the fish, reptiles and amphibians of Louisiana. Take a stroll through Parrot Paradise, where you’ll see rare and colorful birds from the tropics. Youngsters of all ages love the KidsZoo, complete with a playground and hands-on animal encounters. Your visit is not complete without a scenic ride on the Cypress Bayou Railroad. Food concessions are available at the Flamingo Cafe and great souvenirs can be found at the Safari Post!

Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center is a 101-acre facility dedicated to conservation, education, recreation and tourism. Begin your tour at the 9,500-square foot Nature Center Building. This impressive glass and wood structure is home to several exhibits. Once you have absorbed all the Nature Center has to offer, it’s time to venture into the nearly pristine 65-acre cypress-tupelo swamp and a magnolia-beech upland hardwood forest with dramatic ravines. The two ecosystems are linked by a series of trails and boardwalks constructed to allow visitors the opportunity for exploration and magnificent views of the site.
