Indianapolis Theater

American Cabaret Theatre
The American Cabaret Theatre (ACT) relocated to Indianapolis from New York and opened its first season in 1990. This professional theatrical company produces original musical revues and Broadway shows. For its original revues, ACT incorporates a unique blend of music, song, dance and visuals. ACT is located in the renovated 450-seat ballroom of the century-old Athenaeum building downtown.

Asante Children’s Theatre
Founded in 1991 by veteran stage actress Deborah Asante, the Asante Children’s Theatre is an independent drama group based at the Christamore House, a center that houses community and social services. The Asante Children’s Theatre empowers, educates and enlightens youth through theatrical arts, exploring and celebrating African culture.

Through annual citywide auditions, 30 children, ages 8 to 18, are selected as members of the theater troupe. The September through June season includes three Indianapolis performances at the Madame Walker Theatre Center and several presentations throughout the state.

Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre
Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre is Indianapolis only year-round Equity Theater. Since 1973, Beef & Boards has produced Broadway shows and musicals and presented national concert acts. The 500- seat theater presents seven Broadway shows each season along with its annual Christmas Spectacular, a holiday tradition. Beef & Boards produces all of its shows, recruiting actors locally, as well as from Chicago and New York. Broadway shows run Tuesday through Sunday evenings with matinees on Sundays, Wednesdays and select Thursdays. Concerts are Monday evenings. A live theatre for kids, The Pyramid Players, is offered each spring and fall on weekdays and Saturday matinee times.

Edyvean Repertory Theatre
Edyvean Repertory Theatre (ERT), located in Ransburg Auditorium at the University of Indianapolis, seats up to 750 and patrons can enjoy Edyvean’s mix of classical, contemporary and musical productions that explore and celebrate the human journey. The Edyvean has both audio describers to explain the action on the stage to patrons who are visually impaired and FM sound enhancement equipment for patrons who are hearing impaired. After select Friday night performances, Matrix discussions are held to give audience members the opportunity to talk with actors and directors. Between the Saturday matinee and evening performances, “Food for Thought” is presented as part of a dinner program to give insight to various design and background elements of each production.

Indiana Repertory
The Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT) is Indiana’s premier professional, resident and not-for-profit theatre. Established in 1972, the IRT was named the state’s “theatre laureate” as designated by the General Assembly in 1991. The IRT presents the best in classic and contemporary theatre, comedy and drama. During its October to May season, the theatre produces a sixplay Signature Series, a holiday production and a Discovery Series aimed at middle and high school students. The IRT serves more than 40,000 students annually with special student matinees, postshow discussions and study guides. Since 1980, the IRT has been housed in the Indiana Theatre building, an opulent renovated 1927 movie palace that features distinctive Spanish Baroque architecture. The building boasts a three-theater complex — the 607-seat Main stage, the 314-seat Upper stage and the 150-seat Cabaret – as well as complete production and administrative facilities.

Indianapolis Civic Theatre, the nation’s oldest continuously operating community theatre, has been a vital part of Indianapolis since 1914, providing outstanding entertainment and unmatched opportunities for professional, a vocational and educational growth. Each season, the Indianapolis Civic Theatre entertains nearly 50,000 patrons with its main stage productions, while simultaneously serving as a community resource for local theatre artists, technicians, volunteers and aspiring students of the performing arts. More than 7,000 students attend school-time performances of a main stage production annually. Junior Civic offers unique, theatre-based educational program for children of all ages, including year-round workshops, performances and recitals. Following an $11 million renovation, completed in 1996, the facility, formally known as the Murat Shrine Temple, was renamed The Murat Centre The Murat Centre is now the host facility to the city’s premiere entertainment and special events with its newly renovated Murat Theatre, Egyptian Ballroom, Corinthian Hall and Grande Lobby. The historical beauty and intimate setting of the Murat Theatre is a natural lure to the highest caliber of Broadway shows and today’s finest contemporary entertainers.

The Indianapolis Theatre is Indiana’s premiere contemporary theatre producing 12 cutting-edge, off-Broadway-style shows each season utilizing both the Main stage and Underground Stage venues. The Indianapolis Theatre produces issue-oriented contemporary works and strives to challenge audiences with plays that examine individual’s responsibilities to society.

Located in the historic Chatham Arch neighborhood, the Indianapolis is just blocks from the Massachusetts Avenue entertainment district. Celebrating its 19th season, The Indianapolis is consistently awarded top honors in local and state media “Best of” lists. In addition, playwrights from around the world submit more than 200 entries in the Indianapolis Theater’s annual competition, the Frank Basile Festival of Emerging American Theatre. The two winning plays are produced during the Indianapolis season.

Theatre on the Square
Theatre on the Square (TOTS), located on Massachusetts Avenue in the Chatham Arch historic district, explores popular to lesser-known plays and musicals in an intimate setting, seeking to engage and challenge audiences and volunteers and to expand theatre education both for artists and the community. The facility houses two stages: the main stage with a seating capacity of 140 and a smaller one that accommodates up to 60 patrons.

TOTS, offering diversity in programming, reaches out to a large cross-section of the Indianapolis community. Each show is unique in the issues approached and the audience targeted. Further, TOTS has established a kind of rating system for itself, informing prospective ticket buyers if a program is “suitable for families,” “for mature audiences” or contains “alternative lifestyle subject matter” TOTS produces 13 shows each year.

Freetown Village
Freetown Village, housed at the Indiana State Museum, is a living history exhibit with 15 different educational programs to portray the lives of African-Americans in Indiana after the Civil War. Programs include first-person character portrayals, theater performances, storytelling, music, craft and heritage workshops, distance learning, and special events. Established in 1982, Freetown Village performs Tuesday through Sunday at the Indiana State Museum. Freetown Village also hosts An Evening Dinner, which includes authentic foods, parlor games, storytelling and songs. The group also portrays such events as 1870 wedding and Christmas festivals. Massachusetts Avenue Arts District Four art galleries, five theaters, several food and entertainment venues, retail stores, and other residential and business establishments are located within the five-block area, designated as a district in 1993.

Theatre on the Square, Indianapolis Theatre, American Cabaret Theatre, and Murat Centre formed the Massachusetts Avenue Theatre Alliance to facilitate joint promotions. A catalyst to the formation of the alliance, Theatre on the Square moved to the neighborhood before its 1993-1994 season. The successful American Cabaret Theatre relocated to the area from New York City in 1989 and the Indianapolis Theatre moved to the area in 1987.

Pike Performing Arts Center
The Pike Performing Arts Center, housing a 1,449-seat state-of-the-art auditorium and a 150 seat Studio Theatre, is located on the northwest side of Indianapolis. Newly constructed in 1996, this facility presents a season of professional touring performances including dance, concerts, musical theatre, Shakespeare and one man shows from September through April.
