About Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs has many features of a modern urban area, such as parks, bike trails, urban open-area spaces, business and commerce, theatres and other entertainment.  It is the second largest city in Colorado. At an elevation of 6,035 feet, Colorado Springs is over a mile above sea level, though some areas of the city are significantly higher. The city itself is situated near the base of one of the most famous American peaks, Pikes Peak, on the east side of the Rocky Mountains. The city is the county seat of El Paso County.

Because the Rocky Mountains are close in proximity to Colorado Springs, outdoor activities are abundant and diversified. Colorado Springs is home to some of the best weather anywhere, with low humidity and an average 300 days of sunshine each year. Winter brings skiing, snowmobiling and sledding while summer recreation includes hiking and biking in the rugged beauty of the mountains. Golfing, fishing, rafting, horseback riding, goldmine tours and camping are often also enjoyed by the residents of Colorado Springs.

The city is currently experiencing substantial growth and has been identified as one of the nation’s top ten fastest growing economies.  Many high-tech businesses reside in the city, including a large number of computer chip manufacturers such as Intel, and the legandery chip foundary INMOS. The Mountain West Conference has its administrative headquarters in Colorado Springs.  Colorado Springs is also home to a large number of military installations and important national defense agencies. It is also home to the United States Air Force Academy, one of only five military academies in the entire country.
