The Alberta Ballet is the third largest in Canada and has been in existence since 1966. The company’s season runs from September to May and performs for thousands of Albertans each year, including favorites like the Nutcracker Suite during the holidays. The Ballet also has educational outreach programs and a dance school.

Alberta Theatre Projects is known for presenting contemporary plays, many of Canadian origin. The group started as a small children’s theater program, but has since grown to one of the largest producers of new plays in Canada. The group presents a festival each year of new Canadian work.

Art Central is a nice complex in downtown Calgary that aims to be a hub for visual arts, with different galleries, studio space, and cafes and restaurants. It’s a great place to go to and spend some time checking out the different work and grabbing a bite to eat for a relaxing afternoon.

The Art Gallery of Calgary is a non-profit public art gallery that showcases 15 to 20 exhibitions each year by dozens of different artists. The gallery has 4 different exhibition seasons each year, so the art stays fresh. There’s also an educational outreach program.

Calgary Opera performs in the Jubilee theatre and comes close to selling out the space every season, so if you’re an opera fan make sure you call in advance to get your tickets. The company performs many new operas as well as old classics, and projects English translations for operas in other languages.

Calgary Philharmonic has been one of Canada’s top orchestras since it’s creation in 1955. The company performs before more than 90,000 people each year and averages about 5 performances each month during the season. Calgary Philharmonic performs family-oriented concerts too, so it’s great for introducing children to classical music.
