The LA bus system is the city’s primary mode of public transportation.  It covers a large area, but can be slow, because bus drivers, like everyone else, get stuck in the city’s infamous traffic. The MTA’s website has schedules, maps, and a trip planner. Fares are currently $1.25 per boarding (no transfers) or $3.00 for a day pass (also good on Metro Rail); you can buy both from any Metro station or Metro bus driver. Bring a street map, as MTA buses sometimes change their routes unpredictably in order to make up lost time.

By rail
The MTA’s Metro is the city’s light rail service.  The $3/day pass works on both the Metro and the bus system.  There are 5 rail lines with plans to extend the red line all the way to Santa Monica, and extend the Gold Line further. The Orange line through the San Fernando Valley (North Hollywood to Warner Center) runs on it’s own bus-road with bicycle path. All rail lines have multiple connecting buses.

The Metro
Metro Rail is very limited in geographical coverage and the routes don’t necessarily connect in the most logical fashion.  It’s a good system if you’re lucky enough to have starting and ending points near stations, but the system certainly isn’t nearly developed as the subways and Els in New York or Chicago.

The lines are:
Red Line– a subway that runs from Downtown (Union Station) through the near west side to the Hollywood area then into the San Fernando Valley. It connects to the Orange Line.

Orange Line– Runs in the San Fernando Valley, it’s really a bus but it has its own roads and functions much like a light rail train.

Blue Line- Runs from a downtown connection with the Red Line south to Long Beach.

Gold Line- Runs from Union Station downtown  north to East side of Pasadena.

Green Line– Runs from Norwalk to Redondo Beach, east to west.  It connects to a free shuttle to LAX and also with the Blue Line.

Metrolink is a commuter train service that runs from Orange County and connects to downtown LA at Union Station.  Service is limited or nonexistent on weekends, but it may be a viable option for the workday.
