Arlington is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture dating from the 1840s. The house was built by Judge William S. Mudd, one of the ten founders of Birmingham. The house is furnished with a collection of 19th century decorative arts. Located on six acres in the heart of Old Elyton, the first permanent County Seat of Jefferson County, Arlington is a center for historical, cultural, and civic activities.

This outstanding nature center situated on the site of an iron ore mine was closed in the 1950s and reopened as a nature refuge in the 1970s. Visitors to this mid-city refuge can explore the former quarries and ore crushers, hike 10 miles of trails, watch hawks soar, study rock formations and enjoy the wildflowers and wildlife.

Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and the forge, has stood guard over Birmingham since 1904. A 10-acre park surrounds the 56 foot statue and observation balcony that sits on a 124 foot pedestal. Visitors can take an elevator to the Vulcan’s observation deck, which offers extraordinary views of the city.
