Dallas is one of the major cities in Texas and is situated 32 miles from Fort Worth. Dallas ranks ninth in size in the USA and third in Texas after Houston and San Antonio.  The city’s prominence arose from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, and its position along numerous railroad lines. The bulk of the city is in Dallas County of which it is the county seat, however, the city spans over four other counties, those of Collin, Denton, Kaufman, and Rockwell. According to the 2010 census Dallas had a population of almost 2.2 million and is estimated to increase to 2.5 million by 2015.

Dallas is the largest economic center in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. The metropolitan economy is the sixth largest in the United States, with a real GDP of $420.34 billion as of 2012.  In 2013 the metropolitan area led the nation with the largest year-over-year increase in employment, with more than three million non-farm jobs, and advanced to become the fourth-largest employment center in the nation behind New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Dallas was founded in 1841 and formally incorporated as a city in February 1856. The city’s economy is primarily based on banking, commerce, telecommunications, computer technology, energy, healthcare and medical research, transportation and logistics. The city is home to the third-largest concentration of fortune 500 companies in the nation. Dallas is located in north Texas and has developed into the bustling metropolis that it is today because of railroads, Many major railroad lines were constructed here it became a railroad hub in 1873 and was connected by railroad to Houston. The interstate highway system in the 1950s and 1960s reinforced and consolidated Dallas’ prominence. As with the railroads, east/west and north/south highways converge here.

 

Fort Worth

Fort Worth is the fifth-largest city in the state of Texas and the 17th-largest in the United States. The city is also large in geographic area as it covers almost 350 square miles spanning the Tarrant, Denton, Parker, and Wise counties and serves as the seat of Tarrant County—the 18th most populous county in the country.

Fort Worth was founded as a military camp in 1849, named after General William Jenkins Worth. Today, the city is portrayed as more old-fashioned and laid-back than its neighbor, Dallas. Known as “Cow town” for its rough-and-rowdy roots, Fort Worth still celebrates its colorful Western heritage today and bills itself as “Where the West begins.”  In more recent years, Fort Worth has been referred to as “Funky town” as well, mainly by urbanites.

Cattle, Railroads, and Oil are the mental images most people conjure of historic Fort Worth, once an army outpost of the American West. Dallas/ Fort Worth Climate

The Dallas/ Fort Worth are in the Piney Woods region of the state of Texas, which means the area is sub-tropical, humid, and prone to storms. The summer season can be hot with the highest temperatures reaching into the triple digits with the average summer day being in the mid nineties. The summer nights give some relief to the hot daytime temperatures, the average being in the mid to upper seventies. The spring and autumn climates are less extreme with highs in the mid seventies and lows in the mid fifties and bring them the vibrant colors of the seasons. With its humid climate and rainy weather the Dallas/Fort Worth area can see flooding and, occasionally, experience tornados. When moving into the Dallas/ Fort Worth area it is important to be vigilant in times of extreme weather.
