This 1861 Greek Revival building is the home of the Ohio Legislature. The dome of the rotunda is painted with the state seal; the building also has portraits of Ohio’s governors and presidents and historical documents. You can take a self-guided tour of the Senate chamber when it’s not in session.

St. Joseph Cathedral
Located in the heart of downtown, this beautiful Catholic church dates back to the mid-1800s. Featuring 19th-century French Gothic Revival architecture, the cathedral houses European stained-glass windows depicting the life of Christ and the 12 apostles. Weddings are usually held at 11am and 2:30pm on Saturday. Historic, religious and art tours are available by appointment.

Santa Maria

If the name of this attraction evokes memories of history class, it’s because the Santa Maria was Christopher Columbus’ flagship on his famous journey from Spain to the New World. Now a museum sitting in the Scioto River, the Santa Maria re-creates the life and times of a 15th-century sailor.

When Anthony Thomas started making chocolate in 1916, he never imagined his company would eventually produce about 8 million pounds a year. The largest privately owned candy manufacturer in the Midwest welcomes visitors to tour its plant. After the tour, visitors are treated to a free sample.

This reconstruction of a rural county seat of the mid-19th century includes sixteen buildings, all of them connected by a wooden boardwalk. The buildings house 22 craft shops, residences, and offices, in which costumed interpreters talk about life in Ohio during the Civil War. Also on site are period gardens, a Gothic Revival-style church, and the Colonel Crawford Inn, a period restaurant where you can sample authentic Colonial recipes.
