If all the institutes of higher learning in Tokyo were counted, they would number over 200. Tokyo University is the most respected state university and Waseda and Keio are two private universities held in high regard.

The University of Tokyo consists of 10 faculties, 15 graduate schools, eleven affiliated research institutes, 21 university-wide centers and various other large and small research and educational facilities promoting diverse advanced research and educational activities. It has about 7,600 teaching and administrative staff on three campuses at Hongo, Komaba and Kashiwa. As of May 2005, The University of Tokyo had 2,144 registered international students, which correspond to about 7% of the total number of Japanese students.
