Stockholm Public Transportation

Public transportation is a big thing in Sweden and you can expect to go most everywhere with it. All towns have local or regional bus services, those on railway lines also have commuter trains. Gothenburg and Norrköping have trams and Stockholm also a subway system with 100+ stations. All airports are serviced by some sort of public transportation – at the smallest places it may be a shared van or other form of taxi.

You can travel with SL throughout the County of Stockholm. The area covers a distance of several kilometers outside the actual city centre and includes all services on the Metro, commuter trains, suburban railways such as the Roslagsbanan, Saltsjöbanan, and the Lidingöbanan trains, and hundreds of bus lines.

Bus
Board the bus through the front doors and show your ticket to the driver. At certain locations in Stockholm’s city centre there are inspectors that admit passengers through the rear doors too. When you wish to disembark, push the ‘stop’ button. The word ‘Stannar’ (stopping) lights up in the display on the bus. On Stockholm city centre blue buses you must also push a button to open the doors. This button is on the pole next to the door.

Metro & Commuter Trains
All Metro and commuter trains stop at all stations along the line, apart from express trains that skip certain stations. Express trains only run on the commuter lines and during peak hours. The underground in Stockholm is one of the world´s most extensive underground networks with 110 kilometers of track and 100 stations. There are three lines, the green, the red and the blue, which converge at T-Centralen at the Central Railway Station. Subway stations are marked with a blue T in a white circle.

There is a manned barrier and automatic barriers for those with cards at almost all of the stations. At the smaller stations there are no barriers at all. You must buy a ticket from the ticket machine if you do not already have one.   The subway is called the world’s longest art exhibition! Travelers can enjoy exciting, beautiful and varying artistic experiences – sculptures, mosaics, paintings, installations, reliefs, grottoes and springs by some 140 different artists.

Suburban Railway
There are no barriers on the Roslagsbanan, Saltsjöbanan, Lidingöbanan, Tvärbanan and Nockebybanan trains. Instead there are ticket inspectors onboard these trains. This also applies on the commuter trains between Nynäshamn and Västerhaninge, and between Gnesta and Södertälje. Show your ticket to the conductor.

The biggest of Sweden’s several train operators is SJ, Swedish State Railways, which provides time tables and route information in English on their site.

Ferries
Sweden is situated on a peninsula and ferries play a major role in transportation to and from neighboring countries. Information on ferries is provided on our page with a map of northern Europe.

Taxi
There is the ordinary car taxi. This type can also be a small van, so ask for a large cab if the group is larger than four. All taxis carry a sign on the roof, illuminated if vacant. Try to check if the driver has his license clearly visible in front, if not you should consider taking another one. If you want to take a taxi to or from the international airports in Stockholm, Göteborg or Malmö be sure to agree upon the price in advance. (The situation at Stockholm Arlanda airport is very competitive and the lowest current price into town is currently SEK 350 for which an advance reservation is needed with the company making the offering info@transfer.se. A more normal fare is around SEK 450-550.) Most taxis accept credit cards and these taxis can also provide a receipt.
