The Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA) operates in the San Juan metropolitan area. The bus stops are marked by magenta, orange and white signs which read Parada.

There are also mini-buses/taxis (“carros públicos” or “guaguas”) that usually carry between 5-14 people. Públicos are a good way of getting around, but be prepared to wait for the car to fill up and make little stops all along your route. This can add more than an hour travel time depending on how far you are going.

The Tren Urbano (urban train) is a 10.7 mile (17.2 km) metropolitan rapid-transit system. It links the San Juan central business district to residential and employment areas in San Juan, Bayamón, and Guaynabo. The Tren Urbano currently has 16 stations, ten of which are elevated. Four are at grade or in open cut-out areas, and two are underground.

There are plans for other phases to extend the system to Santurce, the municipality of Carolina, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Isla Verde, Old San Juan, and Caguas.

The train runs everyday from 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM.   All fares include a one-way transfer to ride the bus.

Taxis
Taxis are usually abundant, especially in tourist areas. There are often additional charges for luggage, waiting time and home or business drop-off. Tips are not included.

Recently the Public Service Commission determined flat rates to various points of tourist interest from the Airport.   All cabs authorized by the Public Service Commission use meters to charge fares, except in charter trips outside usual taxi zones.  Taxi’s are $20.00 an hour.
