Westchester County

ABOUT THE CITY

Westchester County is a primarily a suburban county located in the southeastern part of New York State. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area.  At its southern most point Manhattan is less than 15 minutes away, but from the northernmost points in Westchester, which include Somers and Peekskill, it will take you closer to two hours to reach Grand Central Station. For commuters, there is continual service to Manhattan’s Grand Central Station and points within the county.

Westchester has somewhat misleadingly acquired an over generalized image of affluence (eighth highest per capita personal income), homogeneity, insularity, and elitism.  It is also home to a maximum security state prison, Sing Sing, and a nuclear power plant, Indian Point.

You’ll enjoy visits to Playland located in Rye.  Not only is it an amusement park, it’s on the National Register of Historic Places. Opened by the county in 1928, it was the first completely planned amusement park in the nation.

    Westchester County

Westchester County is a suburban county in the southeastern part of the state of New York. It is part of the New York Metropolitan Area. At the closest point, Westchester is only 2 miles north of Manhattan. One can walk this distance in about 40 minutes, the amount of time it would typically take to drive from Westchester to Manhattan. However, most places in Westchester are much farther from most places in Manhattan than this example suggests.

There are six cities in Westchester County, listed by size: Yonkers, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, White Plains, Peekskill, and Rye.

    History

The rights to the land in southern New York State that now make up Westchester County were purchased from the first-known residents, members of various Indian tribes, in the 17th Century. In the 300 years since, the area has changed from scattered farms and small villages to a county with more than 890,000 residents descended from most races and nationalities. Westchester’s early development was along the western boundary of the Hudson River and the eastern edge of Long Island Sound.

Virtually every major highway has been completely reconstructed over the last 10 years at a cost of more than one billion dollars. The net result is an extensive network of expressway, parkways and highways that is well designed and maintained, making Westchester’s highway network one of the best fully modernized in the nation. There are three major interstate highways that are part of the New York State Thruway System, and various Parkways such as the Hutchinson River, Saw Mill River, Cross County, Sprain Brook, Taconic State and the nation’s first. Bronx River Parkway. From central Westchester it takes only 30 minutes to midtown Manhattan; 35 minutes to northern New Jersey; 35 minutes to long Island; 20 minutes to southwestern Connecticut; and 3 hours to Boston.

    Education

    Community Colleges

Community colleges exist for two major purposes. The first is to serve as a bridge from high school to college by providing courses for transfer toward a bachelor’s degree. Four out of 10 collegebound high-school graduates start their college education this way.

The second function of community colleges is to prepare students for the job market by offering entry-level career training as well as courses for adult students who want to upgrade their skills for the workplace. They often offer programs that are not available at four-year schools, like fashion design.

    Online Learning

Recent years have witnessed the rise of online degree programs, to allow the busy professional a chance to work at their own pace from the comfort of their home on the path to getting a degree. The costs to students are typically the same as for traditional classes— and financial aid is equally available—while the cost to the institution can be much less.

There are online universities ranging from legitimate distance learning systems to fly-by-night degree-mills. It’s important to research a particular institution before deciding to enroll in their system. Generally, brick-and-mortar schools that also offer online classes are the safest, though there are plenty of fully accredited online universities out there.

Nearly 3 million students are believed to be taking online classes at institutions of higher education in the United States this year. That number has been growing about 25% a year recently. Now, virtually all public higher education institutions, as well as a vast majority of private, for-profit institutions, now offer online classes. By contrast, only about half of private, nonprofit schools offer them. Online schools offer everything from Associate’s degrees to Doctoral programs with available emphases in everything from Business Administration to Criminal Justice to Nursing. Some programs require students to attend some campus classes or orientations, but many are delivered completely online. Online courses generally require a computer with a broadband connection, but are now a serious option for the busy professional.

    Public vs. Private

Public colleges are usually less expensive, particularly for in-state residents. They get most of their money from the state or local government. Private colleges rely on tuition, fees, endowments, and other private sources. Private colleges are usually smaller and can offer more personalized attention and often more prestige.
