The Toronto Transit Commission runs the public transportation system in the city, and does a very nice job of it.  Fare is currently $2.75, which includes transfers.  You can buy day passes that will allow you unlimited travel for the day, or weekly and monthly passes.

There are three subway lines, and streetcar and bus systems in place.  The TTC’s website has good information on routes and fares.  The areas surrounding Toronto also have transit systems, but there is no free transfer between systems.  There are weekly greater Toronto area passes valid on all of these systems at once.

PATH System
The world’s longest underground pedestrian network at 11 kilometers, Toronto’s PATH extends as far as Union Station to the south and The Eaton Centre to the north. There are lots of stores and restaurants dotting the lanes, and a smart color-coded direction system keeps you from getting lost.

Taxi Service
Cabs can be hailed on the streets, found in front of the major hotels, or called. They are always expensive; there is a $2.30 minimum charge for the ride, plus approximately $2 for each additional mile. There’s also a 10 cent charge per bag.

The major companies are:
Diamond (416) 366-6868
Yellow/Metro (416) 504-4141
Co-op Taxi (416) 504-2667

Ferries
Ferries travel to and from the Toronto Islands daily in all seasons; however, the hours are irregular in winter. In summer, the boats leave three or four times each hour. The departure docks are located behind the Harbour Castle Hilton.
