Calgary Golf

Golf might just be the most popular sport in Calgary.  More than half the population here plays golf, more than any other city.  Here’s a list of some of Calgary’s fine courses.

Pinebrook Golf &Country Club

Pinebrook is an equity club for members only.  The original course on the site was built just after WWII, though it’s been redone since then.  The current course covers 6,581 yards from the long tees and has a par of 71.

Redwood Meadows Golf Club

Redwood Meadows is operated by the Tsuu T’ina Nation and is about 20 minutes from Calgary.  The club is semi-private, so even if you’re not a member you can play, though greens fees are steeper.  The course is nearly 7,300 yards long from the black tees, and par 72.  The club also has practice facilities and lessons available.

Douglasdale Estates Golf Club is located in the Douglasdale Estates community, and has very reasonable rates for play. Holes on this short course are between 118 and 375 yards long; and the par is 60.

Bearspaw is an 18 hole Private Equity golf course.  The club was founded in 1983.  The country club’s course stretches over 6,810 yards from the long tees, and is par 71.

The Calgary Elks Lodge has a semi-private 18 hole course that is 6,810 yards from the long tees.  It was redesigned in 1992, and has plenty of practice facilities available to tune your game.  The club helps raise money for various Calgary charities.

McCall Lake Golf Course

McCall Lake is a popular municipal golf course that’s well maintained and has wide-open fairways that roll over gentle hills.  It’s 6,790 yards long, including the 406 yard 9th that starts with 260 yards of water.

Heather Glen was opened in the 1980s as a private course, but since has been renovated and now has 27 holes available for public play.  The course is par 72 and 6,664 yards long.  The on-site course has upscale pub food, and the club has ample practice facilities.

Richmond Green is a short 9 hole municipal course that’s par 27.  It’s cheap to play, and you can rent clubs and pull carts, so it’s great for beginners to go out and get a feel for golf, or for more seasoned pros to play a fast round and hone their game.

Glencoe Golf and Country Club

Glencoe is a private, non-equity club that has 45 holes of beautiful golf.   There are also ample practice facilities that members can use, so even if you’re not playing a round that day, you can sharpen your skills.  The club also has exercise and sport facilities.

Mapleridge Golf Course

Mapleridge is another of Calgary’s municipal courses.  This one covers nearly 6600 yards and is par 72, so it’s designed for those with a more advanced skill level.  Showing up late in the day?  Don’t worry, you can play a late round of 9 too.

Highland is perfect for beginners with a 9 hole par 31 course that runs just over 2,000 yards.  There’s a clubhouse with a big screen TV and a restaurant to relax in too.

Confederation Park Golf Course

Confederation Park Golf is a 9 hole municipal course for better golfers.  It’s 3,211 yards long and has a par of 36.  There’s also a snack bar and lessons available, along with club and cart rentals.

Lakeview Golf Course

Lakeview is a short 9 hole municipal course that’s a par 30.  The course covers 1,612 yards and has club and pull cart rentals, along with a snack bar.

Earl Grey Golf Club

Earl Grey is a terrific private club that has an 18 hole main course and an additional 9 hole executive course.   It’s known as one of the best clubs in the area.  If you’re good (or lucky) enough to hit a hole in one year, the club will plant a tree as a monument to your feat.

Shagganappi Point is the largest of Calgary’s municipal courses.  There are 27 holes here total, an 18 hole par 70 and a 9 hole par 33.  The course offers lessons and has a practice facility, along with rentals and a club house.

Priddis Greens

Priddis Greens is a private golf club about a half hour southwest of Calgary.  The course is consistently ranked among the best in Alberta.  There are two courses here, both 18 holes and par 72.  The Hawk course is just shy of 7,000 yards while the Raven course is 6,800.

Country Hills is a private equity golf club that has two 18 hole courses, perhaps most noted for water hazards, there are 7 miles of them between the two courses.  The club opened in 1992.

Shaw-Nee Slopes is an 18 hole par 70 that opened in the mid 1960s and has underwent several revisions since then.   All green fees include range balls so you can warm up, and the club sells memberships and multi-packs, for preferential booking.

Lakeside Greens is a semi-private club with a 6,800 yard course.  There’s also a full clubhouse with a restaurant, locker room, and exercise equipment.  The club has annual and equity memberships, though visitors are welcome as well.

Valley Ridge is a semi-private club that has equity memberships but is open to the public as well.  It’s 18 holes are 7,000 yards long.  In 2002 the club opened a new teaching and practice center, and it also has a few different banquet facilities.

About 20 miles south of downtown Calgary, Heritage Pointe is one of the nicest public courses in the country.  It has 27 holes along with great practice facilities and a full service clubhouse. Heritage Pointe is made up of 3 courses of 9 holes each, so you can mix and match to suit your desires.  Greens fees include a cart and use of the practice facilities.

The Eaglequest Calgary Dome is a terrific indoor practice facility, so you can keep your skills sharp in the worst weather.  It has a good instruction school, along with a driving range, putting green, and a course simulator, so you can play wherever you’d like.
